- Production & technical support awards: these go to the ministry/industry stakeholders who contributed to the creation, facilitation and sustainability of the artists and their music. Their nomination is based on the quality, quantity & popularity of their nominated works in the eligible period;

- Musician/Instrumentalist of the year
- Dancer/Dance group of the year
- DJ/VJ of the year
- T.V personality/station of the year
- Radio personality/station of the year
- Print media personality/company of the year
- Social media personality/platform of the year
- Manager/Promoter of the Year
- Lifetime achievement and special merit recognition awards: these are special recognitions to long serving artists and individuals or institutions that contribute significantly to social transformation and wellbeing of artists and communities. The special merit awards may be received by non-artists and/or persons not directly in the music business. (These are decided by the VIGA Executive and FGAU members and are not subjected to public voting, though the public may propose nominees)

- Genre/style awards: these go to the artists with the most outstanding and successful works by style authenticity, production proficiency and popularity during the eligible period.

- East African Song/Artist of the year (considers music by artists from within E. Africa)
- Special entity Song/Artist of the year (considers gospel music by ‘secular’ artists)
- Diaspora Song/Artist of the year (considers music by Ugandans living out of Uganda)
